Young Scholars Conference

From March 27-28, AWC hosted its annual Young Scholars Conference at UT-Austin. Entitled “Who Shall Lead? America’s Past, Present, and Future Engagement in the World,” this year’s conference examined America’s role in shaping global dynamics, fostering transnational cooperation and security, and addressing pressing foreign issues. The conference convened doctoral students and early scholars to present on a variety of themes including: The Theory & Practice of American Foreign Affairs & IR; National Security Law & Policy; Security, Strategy, & Leadership; and Transformation, Decision-making, & Defense.

The conference opened with a special keynote session, “History & Politics: A Conversation with Karl Rove,” moderated by AWC alumnus Joseph Ledford. The conference also featured a series of distinguished keynotes and conversations, including: “Perspectives on National Security,” with Matthew Waxman and Roger Zakheim; “Prudent & Judicious American Engagement,” with General Robert B. Neller; and “Crisis is the Only Constant: Rethinking NATO’s History at 75,” with Susan Colbourn and Anthony Eames.
