Our Events: Spring Fellows Summit

AWC hosted the 2023 Spring Fellows Summit in Austin, Texas, from February 15-17. The Summit was an opportunity for current fellows to reconvene following the Fall Summit in October. The AWC Fellows discussed their current projects and met scholars from the UT-Austin community who share similar interests in history, policy, and political science.

The Summit began with an introductory dinner with Dr. Aaron O’Connell, Associate Professor of History at UT-Austin and Director of Research at the Clements Center for National Security. As Director of the LBJ Presidential Library and Clements Center Faculty Fellow, Dr. Mark Lawrence gave the AWC Fellows a private tour of the Library and talked about President Johnson’s legacy. Additionally, the AWC Fellows attended Mr. Daniel Runde’s presentation on his new book, The American Imperative: Reclaiming Leadership Through Soft Power, hosted by the Clements Center for National Security and the Strauss Center for International Security and Law. Mr. Daniel Runde is a senior vice president, director of the Project on Prosperity and Development (PPD), and holds the William A. Schreyer Chair in Global Analysis at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).

The Summit concluded with the AWC Young Scholars Conference entitled, “What Now? Updating Great Power Competition After the Russian Invasion of Ukraine.” The distinguished keynote speaker for the conference, Mr. Dan Blumenthal, Senior Fellow and Director of Asian Studies at the American Enterprise Institute, joined the AWC Fellows for dinner to discuss career pathways, American foreign policy in the Indo-Pacific, and the importance of research for national security.

At the end of the academic year, our AWC Fellows will attend the AWC Annual Policy Conference from April 27-29.
