Annual Policy Workshop

On Friday, April 26, AWC hosted its Annual Policy Workshop, focusing on the theme of “managing escalation in contemporary conflicts.”

In every critical theater of geopolitics today, the United States faces a challenge of escalation management and control. U.S. leaders have considerable military, economic, and diplomatic tools at their disposal but must carefully calibrate how those tools are employed to reassure allies and restrain adversaries. Strategists in academia and the government have wrestled with the problem of escalation control for decades; however, only recently has the question of escalation control in conflicts involving near-peer rivals returned to the forefront of U.S. policy.

Over the course of the day, senior scholars and policy practitioners evaluated whether the current body of scholarship has useful lessons for contemporary situations in Europe, the Middle-East, and the Indo-Pacific.
